The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York announced the second release of a funding opportunity to improve elder-care competence of graduates of nursing and social work schools in western and central New York on November 27, 2012.
The Investing in an Elder-Competent Workforce: Nursing and Social Work Students program announcement includes two options for Foundation support: Enhancing Advance Care Planning and Geriatric Care Rotation Development.
For applicants selected to participate in the Advance Care Planning option, it is expected that:

Two faculty members will become certified as instructors in the Respecting Choices® advance care planning program; and -
All students will complete the certification training as part of their academic program and become certified as Respecting Choices facilitators.

Since 2006, the nursing program at Genesee Community College and the Genesee County Office for the Aging in western New York have worked together to improve the elder-care competence of GCC’s nursing students by including certification in the Respecting Choices® advance care planning program and developing a geriatric rotation for students to gain firsthand experience with community-based aging services and learn about the issues affecting older adults.

Eligible applicants for this funding opportunity include accredited two and four-year colleges and universities in western and central New York that currently offer nursing and social work associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.
The deadline to apply for the second cohort is 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013.
